Dr. Francois Giuliani claims that Impotence or Erectile dysfunction medicines often follow spinal cord injuries. Almost 75% of men are not capable of having sex with such injuries, and rest of them - about 25% are able to make sex after spinal cord injuries.

Study funded by Eli Lilly and Co, producer of tadalafil under brand name of Cialis showed that its drug could increase sexual desire in men up to three times. 197 men from different countries: France, Germany, Spain and Italy with average age 38 who have spinal cord injuries took a part in this amazing study.

Giuliano’s team reported that all men had moderate erectile dysfunction after a one-month period while no one got any medicine.

After that month 142 men got Cialis pills and rest of them - 44 men got a placebo for a 12-week test period. They were obligated to do not take more than one pill per day and only if they are planning a sexual activity.

After those 4 months results showed that group of men who were been taking Cialis achieved almost 50% successful of all sexual intercourses they had attempted, while men who were under placebo treatment finished only with 16.8 percent outcome.

Cialis and other erectile dysfunction medicines work simply by increasing blood flow in penis what allow man to get and sustain erection at the time of sexual intercourse. Researchers claim that also Viagra and Levitra - drugs similar to the Cialis - could be also helpful with erection problems in men who suffer from impotence after spinal cord injury.

If we could believe the recent research made, erectile dysfunction medicines like a Cialis, Viagra and Levitra are able to increase the fabrication of oxytocin, a reproductive hormone which is discharge during orgasm.

This news was pronounced by scientists from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Tadalafil (ingredient which is active in Cialis) sildenafil (active ingredient of Viagra), vardenafil (Levitra’s active ingredient) and an allied chemical known as T-1032 have been taken to the lab tests with rats.

The scientists made rats to expose their pituitary gland’s part to the chemical substance they had chosen, also known as PDE5 inhibitors, in addition to mild electrical stimulation. Tests showed that rat’s pituitary glands made more oxytocin.

However study didn’t answer the most important question if it will be working in humans as it works on rats?

Therefore, more research is required on this topic because oxytocin takes an important part in various reproductive functions, said researcher Meyer Jackson, Ph. D, and their colleagues.

This study also didn’t show any signs of improvement in oxytocin fabrication without stimulation.

Jackson said: “Erectile dysfunction drugs do not result erections spontaneously; they only enhance the response to sexual stimulation”.

He also added: “The same thing is applicable in case of rats’ posterior pituitary. Cialis, Viagra and other ED related drugs will not encourage the liberation of oxytocin on its own, but it will only augment the amount of release that one get in response to electrical stimulation,”

Those men who are taking erectile dysfunction medicines have few more aspects to be proud of their choice. Apart from Erectile dysfunction treatment, ED medicines could also have good impact on men’s health and protect them from a glut of life-threatening disorders.

First of all, Erectile Dysfunction medicines could be helpful in the cancer treatment. According to the study made by researchers from John Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, Viagra enabled a two and three-fold reduction of tumor size in mice.

By restraining the nitric acid which is believed to form a ‘curtain’ what gives cancer cells ability to hide, medicines also are useful for the body’s immune system in seeking and destroying cancer cells, study released in The Journal of Experimental Medicine shows.

Moreover, ED drug could also ease damage to heart muscle, when it will be given after a heart attack. Researchers from Virginia Commonwealth University founded study which showed that Viagra and Cialis may also be effective in decreasing heart muscle damage if given to patients who had a heart attack.

Risk of getting erectile dysfunction is much higher in men who are addicted to cigarettes. According to study made by Tulane University researchers, the more man smokes cigarettes, the greater the risk of getting ED is.

This study had been founded by a team of researchers directed by Jiang He, Professor of Epidemiology at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. The researchers looked closer at the connection between smoking a cigarette and erectile dysfunction in a study made in China on 7,684 men in 2000-2001. To asses the impact of cigarette smoking on the erectile dysfunction, the researchers gave men with no vascular disease special questionnaires. Men who take part in the study got 35 to 74 years.

Researchers came up with that there was a major arithmetical connection between the number of cigarettes burned by men and their probability of having erectile dysfunction. This connection is even stronger if the man suffers from diabetes. Study showed that about 22.7 percent of erectile dysfunction cases in Chinese men could be linked to cigarette smoking.

Despite of that Erectile Dysfunction is not an acute health condition, it has impact on the ones well-being and quality of life. The results of Tulane research suggest that fact smoking is strongly connected with ED should be used to decrease the possibility of erectile dysfunction.

Eli Lilly and Co. figured out how advertises its erectile-dysfunction medicine in Italy and the solution seemed natural: hold a series of tango workshops to help couples revive their passions.

Just like a pro couple who danced on stage, Lilly and its partners in medical market, give their costumers possibility to talk and find an answer about their sexual health problems by providing them access to counselors and medical experts.

Cialis situation at the European market is very important for Lilly, after it gets approval to sell its one-a-day version of the erectile-dysfunction medicine there. Lilly also targets U.S. to get approval there later this year.

Only Cialis could be bought in once-a-day doses, which give Lilly clear lead over the other manufacturers of Viagra and Levitra.

This product will be targeted for the men who would like to have sex two or more times a week without confining it to a limited time.

Another advantage of Cialis over the Viagra and Levitra is that its dose works for about 36 hours instead of about 4 hours like competitors products.

Cialis trails rival Viagra in the U.S., however Eli Lilly and Co. is the leader in 22 nations over the world from France to Mexico, in the $3 billion market for erectile dysfunction drugs.

All medicines work by the same way, it blocks an enzyme in man, which allows him to achieve and sustain an erection.

Doctors predict that once-a-day Cialis version will catch on, Dr. Ronald Suh, from Urology of Indiana said”The baby boomer population is growing. I think a certain patient group could benefit. They want to take it now and be ready whenever.”

There are analysts who think that once-a-day version of Cialis could increase Lilly sales, but only modestly. However it could give a constant and more stable income than current dosage of Cialis, which is taken by the men sporadically.

Jason Fox, a drug analyst at H&R Block in Detroit said: “Giving consumers more options is a positive step, but I don’t think it’s going to be a game-changing development for Lilly or the erectile-dysfunction market, at least in the short run,”

“It seems more like a life-cycle management thing than something that’s completely new” noticed analyst at Miller Tabak & Co. in New York, Les Funtleyder.

The erectile-dysfunction market is continuing its way to establish and grow up from the baby boomer to the medicine cabinet for help in the bedroom.

Eli Lilly and Co. said that Cialis has continued to raise its market share every quarter since 2003 when it was launched. It is sure that any improvement in its products will show improvement also in gaining yield. Lilly also bought exclusivity of the drug from partner Icos Corp. for $2.3 billion.

The company expects that sales of the Cialis will reach $ 1 billion this year, what will give it a blockbuster status.

Lilly also added that Cialis would become No. 1 outside the U.S. in December of this year, what beat out the competitors.

However, the company didn’t make any such predictions in the U.S., where Viagra is still the leader of erectile dysfunction market. Despite that, Cialis’ market share in the U.S. rose from 14 percent in 2003 to 27 percent last year, and in the meantime Viagra’s shares fell from 73 percent to 56 percent, according to IMS Health.

European Commission granted approval for Eli Lilly’s once-a-day version of Cialis (tadalafil), its erectile dysfunction treatment drug, what give the company a head-start over other ED treatment possibilities which are taken on an as-needed basis.

The approval, gave to the public late yesterday, only confirm that company is going to the proper direction, from January acquisition of Icos for $2.3 billion (€1.7 billion). This gave Lilly exclusivity on the Cialis market and sales. Until January, Icos had partnered in a join venture developing and launching Cialis in 2003.

Committee for Medicinal Products for Human use (CHMP) in the UK gave positive opinion for the marketing authorization for 2.5mg and 5mg doses of Cialis.

Lilly expects to launch the new doses in select countries in the second half of 2007 and spreading through other EU countries in 2008. The advised starter dose is 5mg a day, however it could be reduced to the 2.5mg depending on individual tolerability.

The company is still waiting for the decision of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) if it gets approval for the once-a-day Cialis dose.

Cialis the most competitors is Pfizer’s Viagra, it generated worldwide sales of $1.7bn, however Lilly’s product is going after him. Despite that Viagra is more popular in U.S., Cialis has the No.1 place in Europe and it gives its developer annual income of $971m worldwide in 2006.

This new formulation will be a great add-on to the Cialis sales, which now is showing solid growth (up 19 percent each year).

Eli Lilly and Co. was not prepared to speak about sales projections on how well the new version of its product would do in the market, however company spokeswoman, Keri McGrath, told in PharmaTechnologict.com “there is a need for innovation in ED treatments because different patients have different needs”.

This new once-a-day version of Cialis allows man to have sex within a narrow time frame, like while using other products currently available on the market.

Abbas Hussain, president of Lilly’s European Operations said: “The approval of Cialis for once-a-day use marks the first time an oral ED prescription only medicine is available to provide some men with an everyday way to treat their ED”.

The company states that the new once-a-day version which was just approved in the Europe, is designed for men intending to have sex at least twice a week. The previous on-demand version of Lilly’s product at 10-mg and 20-mg doses have been available in the EU since 2002, however at a maximum recommended dose of one pill daily taken shortly before planed sexual activity.

Cialis developer stated that profit fell 39 percent on costs from acquiring Icos Corp. The outcomes outnumber estimates values and Eli Lilly & Co. increase its annual forecast on greater than expected sales of its psychiatric medicines.

Today Eli Lilly & Co. said that first-quarter net income fell to $509 million, or 47 cents a share. Without charges from Icos, which was acquired by Lilly to get the full control on the Cialis erectile dysfunction medicine market, earnings were 84 cents a share. This outnumbered the 79-cent average predictions, sending Lilly’s shares higher.

The company noticed 10 percent sales increase of its top seller schizophrenia drug Zyprexa, and 89 percent for the antidepressant Cymbalta. Eli Lilly & Co., which is based in Indianapolis made the price higher on those drugs this year, however it is spending more money on marketing and has been looking for a new indications. What’s more, the company also doesn’t face generic competition on a well known product this year.

In a telephone interview today Robert Hazlett, an analyst with BMO Capital Markets in New York, said: “It was a solid quarter across the board on the top-line and we expect to see more of the same, given that there is minimal potential patent expiration risk”.

The company increases its annual incomes expectations excluding certain charges to $3.30 to $3.40 from $3.25 to $3.35. Lilly also announced a second-quarter dividend of 43 cents per share, the exact sum it paid out in the first quarter.

Incomes in the quarter rose from $3.7 billion to $4.2 billion.

Shares Rise

Lilly’s shares climbed $1.52, or 2.7 percent, to $58.40 as of 4:02 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. Also by past 12 months 10 percent increase could be noticed in its shares. That trails a 17 percent rose in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology and Life Science Index, which has 25 members.

John Lechleiter, Lilly’s president and chief operating officer, said “Looking ahead for the next nine months, we feel good enough about our business prospects to raise our guidance by a nickel,” Further in a interview he added: “Clearly there are a lot of things we are excited about with regards to our existing products and new products. We’re going to continue to expect to see good solid growth from Cymbalta.”

The seventh-largest prescription medicines maker - Eli Lilly & Co. - bought Icos for $2.3 billion in January, to get the full control over the world’s second-biggest-selling erectile dysfunction treatment medicine, Cialis, which the companies had shared. The company also spends $385 million in the first quarter to license a new experimental diabetes drug from OSI Pharmaceuticals Inc.

Zyprexa

After the 5 percent price increase, Zyprexa’s sales increase 10 percent to $1.1 billion. Cymbalta sales reached 89 percent rose to $442 million.

BMO’s Hazlett said that Zyprexa sales increase is just a benefit from raising the drug price, it puts patients on higher, more expensive doses and gives fewer discounts under the Medicare Part D drug benefit program for the poor, disabled and elderly people.

Sales of Zyprexa and similar antipsychotic medicines makes up the $15 billion market, also more frequent use by adolescents and the elderly helped this score happened, said doctors and analysts of the market. The elderly get the prescriptions for the medicines to unapproved treat dementia from Alzheimer’s disease and teenagers get the medicines prescribed to treat states of depression, autism and hyperactivity.

The company is going to ask U.S. FDA this year for approval its four-week inject able version of Zyprexa.

Eli Lilly & Co. has been sued by at least six states, including Louisiana, West Virginia, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Alaska and New Mexico, on behalf of Medicaid programs, they are looking for reimbursement of money spent on Zyprexa. They said that drug developer didn’t enclose information about the risk and side effects of using this drug to treat conditions for which they weren’t approved.

Byetta

Lilly’s inject able treatment for Type - 2 diabetes known as Byetta achieved 7 percent income rise to $147 million from the fourth quarter of 2006. The new competition from Merck & Co.’s Januvia and the company’s difficulties to produce enough medicine to meet demand are responsible for slower sales grow rate than last year, according to Oppenheimer’s Henry.

He said: “One of the bigger issues there is, how much Byetta they have there to sell?” and added: “They have been having supply issues. It is starting to clear up finally and the product is still growing. Just not as fast as it was.”

Cialis

Cialis, the new erectile dysfunction drug brought in $193.1 million. According to Tim Anderson, who is an analyst with Prudential Equity Group in Menlo Park, California and his last week note to clients new policy where Medicare, the U.S. health insurance program for the elderly and poor, stopped subscribing the medicine this year negatively impacted on the revenue from this drug.

Lechleiter said that the company will have data from a large-scale trial of its hopefulness experimental medicine - prasugral.

According to Lilly’s expectations Prasugrel may become 10 times as effective as Plavix, Bristol-Myers Squibb Co’s drug. $6 billion made by Plavix in 2006 was the world’s second-biggest-selling medicine just after Lipitor, Pfizer Inc.’s cholesterol pill.

Eli Lilly & Co. has also in plans to get an approval for Cymbalta for fibromyalgia, disease which causes muscles weakness and fatigue, Lechleiter added.

Study released in the February 2007 issue of The American Journal of Medicine shows that age, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and lack of physical activity take significant part in causing erectile dysfunction in men. Men with hypertension and diabetes are more liable to the erectile dysfunction and it is advised to screen for impotence for those patients. Data from 2126 men who take a part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in the 2001-2002 have been analyzed by the researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Just in the United States about 18 million of men may suffer from erectile dysfunction. The lastly released erectile dysfunction treatment medicines are very helpful in dealing with this state, however changing bad eating and lifestyle habits may also improve man’s sexual condition. Physical activity, stricter diet and other measures for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and diabetes are very important in treating impotence.

The research was made to assess the prevalence of impotence in male population of the United States; to asses the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors through patients who suffer from erectile dysfunction; and also to find connection between cardiovascular risk factors, like lack of physical activity, with prevalent erectile dysfunction.

The data gathered from a computer self-interview for a patients show that 18.4% of men 20 years and older suffer from erectile dysfunction, defined as “sometimes able” or “never able” to achieve and maintain an erection. Different data, like demographic data, cardiovascular risk factors and levels of physical activity were pull out from the NHANES study.

“The association between erectile dysfunction and lack of physical activity suggests that lifestyle changes, especially increasing exercise level, may be effective no pharmacological treatments. The associations between erectile dysfunction and diabetes and other known cardiovascular risk factors should serve as powerful motivators for male patients for whom diet and lifestyle changes are needed to improve their cardiovascular risk profile. These data suggest physical activity and other measures for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and diabetes may prevent decrease in erectile function.” states investigator Elizabeth Selvin, PhD, MPH, states,

The study is “Prevalence and Risk Factors for Erectile Dysfunction in the US” by Elizabeth Selvin, PhD, MPH, Arthur L. Burnett, MD, and Elizabeth A. Platz, ScD, MPH. It appears in The American Journal of Medicine, Volume 120, Issue 2 (February 2007), published by Elsevier.

With reference to a new report from Harvard Medical School, ” What to Do about Erectile Dysfunction”, riding a bike for long periods may lead to temporary erectile dysfunctions. Men who cycle more than three hours a week are likely to develop this condition.

How is it possible that riding a bike, activity which on the one hand is recommended to maintain a good health, may cause erectile dysfunction? The answer lies in the physical reaction of men’s bodies. When sitting on a bicycle for a long period, the pressure is put on the perineum, the area between genitals and anus. As a consequence, nerves may be harmed and blood flow may be obstructed temporarily, causing tingling or numbness in the penis and, eventually, erectile dysfunction. However, according to one study, it depends on the bicycle, whether the condition will develop. This research showed that men who ride conventional bicycle are likely to develop erectile dysfunction due to rapid (though temporary) drop in oxygen supply to the penis. On the other hand, as indicated by the study, recumbent bicycle did not cause such condition.

If you still prefer riding a conventional bike, you should make some steps in order not to develop cycling-related erectile problems:

Wear padded biking shorts

Your position is very important. You should raise the handlebars so that you are sitting relatively upright. In this way, the pressure is shifted from the perineum to the buttocks.

Choose the right seat- the one that puts less pressure on the perineum. It is advised to use a wide, well-padded or gel-filled seat instead of a narrow seat.

The position of the seat is crucial. Choose the position which reduces the pressure. Make sure it is not so high that your legs are fully extended at the bottom of your pedal stroke, and don’t tilt the seat up.

When you ride a bike for a long time, you should change position and take breaks.

If you feel tingling or numbness in the penis, stop riding for a week or two.

The 32-page report “What to Do about Erectile Dysfunction” was edited by Michael Philip O’Leary, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor at Harvard Medical School. It provides us with the following explanations concerning erectile dysfunction:

The anatomy and physiology of normal function end erectile problems,

The causes of erectile dysfunction, including a self-assessment questionnaire

The range of treatments available (including alternatives to Viagra, Cialis and similar drugs)

The role of counseling

How to include your partner in the therapy of erectile dysfunction.

According to researchers, about one-third of older men suffering from erectile dysfunction will experience natural remission (symptoms will become less severe, however will not disappear completely).

Unfortunately, the researchers also underline, that another third will experience a worsening of this condition over time.

It can’t be denied that erectile dysfunction has received increased attention in recent years. The condition affects 150 million men who are supported with pharmacotherapy (for instance Viagra). However, the great scale of the problem doesn’t mean that we have a sufficient knowledge concerning the natural course of erectile dysfunction after onset.

Researchers started an investigation, analyzing data for 401 men between 40 and 70 years old with varying degrees of erectile dysfunction who were followed for about nine years as part of the longitudinal Massachusetts Male Ageing Study.

According to Dr Thomas G. Travison from New England Research Institutes in Watertown, Massachusetts, “the key and most surprising” thing observed was the proportion of men who showed natural erectile dysfunction remission.

Symptoms of erectile dysfunction improved during follow-up in a total of 141 men or 35 percent.

Unfortunately, of 323 subjects with minimal or moderate erectile dysfunction, 107 (33 percent) experienced a worsening of erectile dysfunction symptoms. Of 78 men with complete impotence, 45 (58 percent) experienced no changes at the end of follow-up.

The study showed certain regularity concerning the natural course of erectile dysfunction. Namely, the chance of remission seem to decline with age and is lower among heavier subjects.

Of course smoking and poor general health additionally increase the chance of worsening the symptoms.

As indicated by Dr Travison, “The most important implication of this work is that it confirms that maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle as one gets older is critical for maintaining, and in some cases improving, male sexual function.”
